MUSHROOM SUPPLEMENT LABELS: SPECIES, FORMS, AND BLENDS
Mushroom supplement labels can look similar on the front while describing very different formulas. One may contain a single named mushroom powder, another an extract, another a proprietary multi-mushroom blend, and another a gummy or liquid with several non-mushroom ingredients.
This guide explains how to read those differences and then maps the concepts to four live VELI products. It does not treat “mushrooms” as one uniform ingredient or turn early research into a promise about any product.
Start with the exact mushroom identity
“Mushroom” is a category, not a complete ingredient identity. A useful label names the common name and may also give the scientific name. Lion's mane, reishi, cordyceps, shiitake, and other species are distinct materials and should not be counted as interchangeable simply because they share a category.
The FDA dietary-supplement identity guidance explains that a product must be identified as a dietary supplement. The facts and ingredient panels then provide the detail needed to understand what the bottle actually contains.
What do fruiting body and mycelium mean?
The fruiting body is the spore-producing structure commonly recognized as a mushroom; mycelium is the branching network of fungal threads. Labels may name one, the other, or both. Those words describe the part or material used, not a universal quality score.
Record the label exactly. If it says fruiting body and mycelium powder, do not rewrite it as fruiting body only. If it says mycelium, do not silently change it to mushroom fruit. Clear identity matters more than a categorical slogan.
What is the difference between a powder and an extract?
A powder generally indicates dried material that has been milled. An extract indicates that processing was used to concentrate or isolate components from starting material. “Extract” alone does not tell you the extraction solvent, ratio, or final composition unless the label or supporting specification provides those details.
A standardized statement can add information when it names the measured constituent and amount or percentage. It still should not be treated as proof of a clinical outcome. Compare powder with powder and extract with extract before judging a front-label number.
Why serving size and amount still come first
The Supplement Facts panel ties ingredient amounts to a serving. A two-capsule serving, one milliliter of drops, and one gummy are different measurement bases. Package size and daily directions are separate details.
The FDA nutrition-labeling guide for dietary supplements explains serving and ingredient declaration requirements. When comparing products, write down the serving size, amount per serving, number of servings, and directions before interpreting the ingredient list.
What does a proprietary blend tell you?
A proprietary blend tells you the total amount of the blend and the ingredients in descending order by weight, but it does not disclose the amount of each ingredient inside that blend. This limits ingredient-by-ingredient comparison.
A label can also combine individually declared mushrooms with a separate proprietary blend. Keep those categories separate. Do not divide the blend total evenly or infer an undisclosed amount.
How strong is the human evidence?
Mushroom research is active, but human evidence varies sharply by species, preparation, population, outcome, and study quality. A 2025 systematic review of lion's mane and cognition or mood reported a small and heterogeneous evidence base. A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis of reishi randomized trials judged the certainty for reviewed outcomes to be very low.
That does not establish that every mushroom formula works or does not work. It means labels and studies must be matched precisely. Species, part, preparation, amount, duration, and outcome matter, and general evidence cannot be copied onto a specific VELI product.
Single mushroom or blend: which is better?
Neither format is universally better. A single-mushroom product makes the identity and amount easier to isolate. A blend provides several ingredients in one serving but may offer less amount-level detail, especially when proprietary blends are used.
Choose based on the exact label, format, directions, dietary preferences, and personal context. More species on the front does not automatically mean a stronger or more suitable product.
How do the live VELI mushroom labels differ?
Lion's Mane Mushroom Capsules
The live Lion's Mane Mushroom label lists 1,000 mg organic Hericium erinaceus fruiting body and mycelium powder per two-capsule serving, standardized to 40% polysaccharides, stated as 400 mg. Its directions allow the two capsules with food or on an empty stomach.
Mushroom Energy & Cognition Drops
The live Mushroom Energy & Cognition Drops label defines 1 ml, or 30 drops, as the daily serving. It lists 100 mg cordyceps extract, 100 mg lion's mane extract, 25 mg Alpha GPC, 25 mg L-tyrosine, and 500 mcg vitamin B12. This is a mixed liquid formula, not a mushroom-only product.
Ten Mushroom Complex Capsules
The live Ten Mushroom Complex label lists cordyceps mycelium powder, reishi fruit extract, shiitake fruit extract, and lion's mane fruit separately, followed by a proprietary blend with six additional named mushroom ingredients. Its serving is two vegetable capsules once daily.
Reishi Relax Gummies
The live Reishi Relax Gummies label lists 200 mg reishi extract plus 25 mg each of L-theanine, lemon balm, passion flower, and valerian root. The direction is one to two gummies daily. This is a mixed gummy format, not a direct substitute for a reishi-only capsule.
How should you compare a mushroom label?
- Name every species and scientific name when provided.
- Record fruiting body, mycelium, or both exactly as labeled.
- Distinguish powder from extract and note any substantiated standardization detail.
- Match every amount to the defined serving.
- Separate individually declared ingredients from proprietary blends.
- Review all non-mushroom ingredients, allergens, sweeteners, capsule materials, and warnings.
- Do not convert early or species-specific evidence into a product promise.
VELI groups these options across Stay Focused, Daily Wellness, and Supplements & Wellness. The Morning Focus, Daily Foundation, and Evening Wind-Down pathways organize comparison; they do not prescribe a stack. For a simple decision framework, read Building a Wellness Routine That Fits Real Life.
